The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia requires all applicants seeking initial admission to the Nursing and Midwifery Register upon graduation from their nursing course, to demonstrate the necessary English language skills. See their website at:

Clinical placement/professional practice:

This course includes extensive professional or clinical placements. Students may be required to undertake clinical placements away from the campus at which they are enrolled, at their own expense (Note: health professional courses generally involve extensive professional or clinical placements).

To successfully complete the Bachelor of Nursing Science –Bachelor of Midwifery degree students are required to recruit pregnant women who consent to the student attending and observing aspects of their care provision in a continuity of care model. Continuity of care experiences are additional to planned professional or clinical placements. Aspects of continuity of care experiences are likely to occur outside business hours. Students who have returned to study where the duration between their previous clinical placement and their pending clinical placement exceeds 12 months, may need to complete the Clinical Reconnect program.

Additional selection requirements

Information published by JCU or otherwise made available to students when applying, may specify additional criteria to be considered in ranking applicants in order of merit if the number of applications exceeds a quota or other limit on the places made available for the course.  Information provided by applicants during the application process and any other information obtained by JCU in the application process may be used by JCU to rank applicants in order of merit by reference to those additional criteria.

Graduates must meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australian (NMBA) (2016) Registered Nurse Standards for Practice and the NMBA (2018) Midwife Standards for Practice to be eligible for registration with the NMBA.

On successful completion of the course, the graduate will be able to:

Nursing

  1. Employ critical thinking and the best available evidence in making decisions that guide safe, quality nursing practice within person-centred, evidence-based and cultural safety frameworks
  2. Establish and maintain effective therapeutic and professional relationships and advocate for others in a context of healthcare and based on mutual trust, respect and collegial partnerships
  3. Critically appraise own nursing practice to ensure they are safe, capable practitioners, who conduct ongoing self-management and respond to concerns about other health professionals’ capability for practice

Midwifery

  1. Articulate the centrality of the relationship of women to the practice of midwifery, that is inclusive of the diverse social, cultural and spiritual values and beliefs unique to each individual, and that upholds her right to autonomy
  2. Retrieve, critically evaluate and apply evidence in support of succinct, sequential and appropriate midwifery practice
  3. Practise responsibly and with accountability, based on knowledge of the Australian health care system and in accordance with relevant policies legislation, ethical, cultural safety and regulatory frameworks with particular emphasis on their role as advocate for women and their babies and the impact of power relationships on midwifery care
  4. Translate, interpret and extrapolate knowledge of midwifery practice to influence safe and effective collaborative woman-centred health outcomes at all levels
  5. Apply cognitive, technical and creative skills within a clearly defined and accepted scope of midwifery practice, ensuring referral as appropriate
  6. Demonstrate comprehensive clinical reasoning, analysis and synthesis of therapeutic interventions, informed by physiological and pathophysiology principles, in a variety of contexts
  7. Communicate effectively with women, their families, communities and members of the health care system to provide holistic woman-centred care in a partnership model
  8. Employ strategies of critical analysis, evaluation and reflection as a framework for practice and continuing professional development of the self, others and the discipline of midwifery

At the discretion of the College Dean, students may be required to undertake a prescribed English language test to ensure that they have an acceptable level of English language proficiency, including at least at the level required to be admitted to the course, to safely participate in professional experience placements.  Refer to Review of a Student’s Suitability to Continue a Course Involving Placement policy.

Eligibility

Students may apply for credit transfer for previous tertiary study in accordance with the Credit Transfer Procedure.

Maximum allowed

48 credit points

Currency

Credit will be granted only for studies completed in the 5 years prior to the commencement of this course.

Expiry

Credit gained for any subject shall be cancelled 11 years after the date of the examination upon which the credit is based if, by then, the student has not completed the course of study prescribed for the degree.

Other restrictions

Up to 48 credit points may be granted only to applicants who hold current registration as a registered nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

All other applicants may receive up to 30 credit points.

Students applying for credit for previous study completed in a Diploma of Nursing must also provide evidence of registration as an Enrolled Nurse (Division 2) with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Up to 24 credit points may be awarded for this qualification.

Students who have completed 24 credit points of their course award requirements, and withdraw from or fail to meet the requirements for progression in the later years, may be eligible for the award of Diploma of Tertiary Studies.

Students who have completed 48 credit points of their professional course award requirements, and withdraw from or fail to meet the requirements for progression in the later years, may be eligible for the award of Associate Degree of Health Sciences.

Course articulation

First year students admitted to the Bachelor of Nursing Science who have achieved a GPA of 5.00 calculated across the 4 subjects in the first teaching period are eligible to apply to transfer to the Bachelor of Nursing Science – Bachelor of Midwifery to commence mid-year.

Achievement of an overall grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average) across the final three years of the bachelor degree; and current registration as a nurse (Division 1) with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
