Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites

Completion of an AQF level 7 bachelor degree in a relevant health discipline, from this or another university; or

Other qualifications recognised by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Academy as equivalent to the above; or

Submission, as an exceptional case, of other evidence of professional and academic attainments, including employment for a minimum of five years in health related activities.

Meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection.  In assessing applications the following will be considered: prior academic performance and prior relevant work experience.

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 2 – Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Additional selection requirements

Course learning outcomes

 Graduates of the Graduate Certificate of Travel Medicine will be able to:
  1. Integrate and apply specialist knowledge in the disciplines of travel and tropical medicine and related areas, with depth in the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation complications, differential diagnosis, investigation and management of travel鈥恟elated communicable and non鈥恈ommunicable diseases across diverse contexts
  2. Review, analyse, synthesise and evaluate information, data and evidence to undertake risk assessment and prioritise potential clinical interventions for communicable and non-communicable diseases
  3. Promote and optimise the health and welfare of travellers and populations impacted by travel
  4. Deliver and facilitate safe and effective collaborative patient鈥恈entred travel鈥恟elated health outcomes within relevant accepted national and international practices and guidelines
  5. Communicate theoretical knowledge, risk assessment, concepts of therapeutic interventions, treatment options and clinical decisions using a high level of oral and written English language and where appropriate, numeracy skills to a variety of audiences
  6. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for continuing professional development requirements based on reflection on current skills, knowledge and attitudes and their application to travel, tropical and geographical medicine and health.
