Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites

Registration as a nurse, doctor of medicine or other health professional in Australia; or

Completion of an appropriate AQF level 7 bachelor degree in a relevant discipline, with 2 years relevant experience or equivalent.

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 3a Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Additional entry requirements

In some instances students may be called for interview, prior to admission.

Course learning outcomes

The Graduate Diploma of Health Professional Education enables health professionals working in regional and remote tropical Australia to complete a postgraduate qualification to enhance their teaching and learning skills for students and trainees in all health professions.  The course introduces basic and advanced concepts essential for learning, teaching  and supervising in clinical settings. Graduates will be equipped with skills to become lead educators for their health profession.

Graduates of the Graduate Diploma of Health Professional Education will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate advanced knowledge relating to the principles, methods and techniques of curriculum design and implementation that includes an understanding of recent developments in health professional education
  2. Critically analyse, evaluate and synthesise models and theories of teaching and learning, assessment, evaluation and curriculum design for learning and benchmarking in health professional education at an advanced level
  3. Apply leadership skills and problem-solving strategies for working with clinical teachers in health profession education
  4. Interpret principles, theories and methods of medical/health professional education for a variety of audiences through high-level written and spoken English
  5. Demonstrate personal autonomy and accountability for own professional development as a “lead” educator.
