Admission Requirements

Pre-requisites

Students must hold provisional registration as a psychologist in Australia.

Completion of an AQF level 8 bachelor honours with a program GPA equal or equivalent to 5.0 or above from a psychology course accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC); or

Completion of an AQF level 8 graduate diploma with a program GPA equal or equivalent to 5.0 or above from a psychology course accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC).

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 3c Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Suitability to Work with Children Card (Blue Card):

This course includes prescribed professional or clinical placements that may involve contact with children under 18 years of age. Students are required to obtain a Suitability to Work with Children Card (which involves a criminal history check undertaken by the Queensland Police) before the start of the first placement. Students must retain a current Suitability to Work with Children Card for the duration of their course, as failure to do so will result in the termination of their admission to the course

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of Master of Professional Psychology, graduates will be able to:

  1. Analyse, adapt and apply complex and contemporary knowledge, skills, and technical competencies in the practice of psychology to facilitate quality client outcomes with consideration of culturally and linguistically diverse populations including Aboriginal and   Torres Strait Islander peoples and the diverse populations of tropical and rural and remote areas.
  2. Apply advanced knowledge of research principles, methods, and ethics to investigate a substantive individual research question relevant to the discipline of psychology.
  3. Expertly communicate with clients, families,  community and organisational representatives, and interprofessional health care teams.
  4. Synthesise, evaluate, and apply theories,   evidence-based practice, and ethical considerations to select, tailor and deliver safe and effective assessment and interventions for a broad diversity   of clients, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  5. Operate individually and with full consideration of the principles of inter-professional learning and practice in accordance with legal, ethical, and organisational guidelines,   incorporating referral processes where relevant.
  6. Reflect critically and respectfully on the practice of one’s self and others within the inter-professional health care team to ensure quality practice, and to plan ongoing professional learning.
