Course pre-requisites

Students must have successfully completed the first three years of the AQF Level 7 MBBS program at JCU with a minimum grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average)in each of the years 2 and 3 of the MBBS course (excluding selective subjects) if commencing after completion of MBBS 3.  If commencing after completion of MBBS 4, a minimum grade point average of 5.0 in each of years 2, 3 and 4 (excluding selective subjects) is required. If commencing after completion of MBBS 5, a minimum grade point average of 5.0 in each of years 3, 4 and 5 (excluding selective subjects) is required.

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 3b Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Students also need to take note that in accordance with the National Registration Board’s requirement, they must hold a valid IELTS (academic module) minimum score of 7.0 in all components within 2 years prior to applying for registration.

Additional selection requirements

Application for entry to the program is by approval of the College Dean.

Quota restrictions on the number of honours places available may apply from time to time as determined by the College Dean.

Information published by JCU or otherwise made available to students when applying, may specify additional criteria to be considered in ranking applicants in order of merit if the number of applications exceeds a quota or other limit on the places made available for the course.  Information provided by applicants during the application process and any other information obtained by JCU in the application process may be used by JCU to rank applicants in order of merit by reference to those additional criteria.

Post admission requirements

Depending on the area of research and/or professional experience placement activities, students must comply with the relevant mandatory pre-placement requirements of the University and the Host facility. Students must complete all professional experience placement requirements by the prescribed deadlines and maintain currency of all requirements throughout their enrolment in the course.

Students must attend research seminars of the College of Medicine and Dentistry and the discipline in which the research is conducted.

Course learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) graduates will be able to:

  2. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in quantitative and/or qualitative research approaches through critical analysis, evaluation and application of the relevant approach

  4. Critically evaluate own capabilities as developing researchers to enable structured further learning
  5. Communicate a clear and coherent exposition of knowledge and ideas to a variety of audiences.
