The pilot encompasses a comprehensive training program for participating pharmacists, who will be equipped to diagnose and treat conditions outlined in the . The program includes:

• Training Component 1*: A rigorous Safe Prescribing Education course, aligned with the NPS Medicinewise Prescribing Competencies Framework, featuring 120 hours of experiential learning.
• Training Component 2: Two specialized clinical training courses focused on health assessment, clinical examination techniques, and the diagnosis and management of selected conditions, incorporating safe prescribing practices learned in Training Component 1.

Before enrolling in the program, pharmacists should consider the following:

1. Pharmacists will be asked to provide evidence of current General Registration as a Pharmacist in Australia without undertakings or restrictions and not be subject to an investigation for professional misconduct or other type of investigation.
2. Consider their access to a suitable primary designated prescriber (DP) +/- a secondary designated prescriber.  It is the individual pharmacists responsibility to identify a suitable primary designated prescriber.
3. Pharmacists are required to attend and participate in 2 x 4 day face to face residentials in 2024.  The residentials will be held in Townsville and Brisbane area.

The program consists of 3 subjects:

• Subject 1 Professional Practice for Pharmacists 1 (3 credit points)
• Subject 2 Professional Practice for Pharmacists 2 (3 credit points)
• Subject 3 PC6300* Safe Prescribing for Pharmacists (6 credit points)

Residential requirements and dates

Pharmacists will be required to participate in a 4-day residential for subject 1 and a second 4-day residential for subject 2.  Several dates are offered across different locations.  Key dates for Subject 1, Subject 2 and Subject 3 are :

Subject 1: The start date for PC6100 (Subject 1) is 17th June 2024

Pharmacists can choose to attend 1 residential (duration of 4 days) from the following 4 dates and locations.  The residentials will be held during the weekdays of the following weeks:

Brisbane area

• Week beginning 8th July 2024
• Week beginning 15th July 2024
• Week beginning 29th July 2024

Townsville

• Week beginning 12th August 2024

Subject 2 and Subject 3: The start date for PC6200 (Subject 2) and PC6300* (Subject 3) will be 16th September 2024. These two subjects will be run concurrently.

Pharmacists can choose to attend 1 residential (duration of 4 days) from the following 4 dates and locations.  The residentials will be held during the week days of the following weeks:

Brisbane area

• Week beginning 14th October 2024
• Week beginning 21st October 2024
• Week beginning 18th November 2024

Townsville

• Week beginning 11th November 2024

The subject has an OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) assessment at the conclusion of the 3 subjects.  The OSCE will be held in the same locations as the residentials.  The proposed dates for the OSCE is between 3rd February and 14th February 2025.

*The Safe Prescribing Education subject (Training Component 1) is currently under review for accreditation by the Australian Pharmacy Council.  The program is seeking, but has not yet been granted, accreditation from the Australian Pharmacy Council. Once accreditation has been granted, the program will be submitted to Queensland Health for approval as an approved training program for the pilot.
