LB5520 Professional Project/Internship & TO5520 Professional Placement/Internship
General Information
Enrolment into either LB5520 or TO5520 is via an application/approval process (permission from Subject Lecturer).
Required learning outcomes, requirements of the subject and subject assessment can be found by visiting .
In applying for LB5520 or TO5520, students have the option to:
- self-source an internship/project with a preferred industry or organisation that interests them most
- undertake a project within their current workplace (students choosing this option are exempt from completing the Mandatory pre-placement requirement module (below)
- apply for a JCU sourced internship/project
Mandatory pre-placement requirement - Workplace, Health and Safety (WHS) Module
Students undertaking a placement for their current employer are not required to complete this module.
Understanding the work, health and safety framework is the first step in becoming a safe worker in any industry. All workers need to have an understanding of WHS before they start work in order to develop the knowledge, skills, values, behaviours.

LB5520 Professional Project/Internship - for MBA students
Eligibility
Students (excluding those undertaking a placement for their current employer) must have completed:
- Mandatory Work, Health and Safety (WHS) module, AND
- A minimum of 21 credit points of LB5, CO5, CP5 or TO5 subjects (depending on degree/program).

Discuss with your workplace supervisor, a relevant workplace project. Some examples can be found here. Please provide your employer with a copy of this guide as it will assist them in creating a suitable project. Project must be separate from your current role in the workplace.
How to apply
Transpose the project information into the Current Employer application form and submit as per instructions provided on the bottom of the form
What happens next?
As per timeline information (above):
- Application will be assessed by the subject lecturer, then forwarded onto Academic Director for final approval
- Student will receive an email from the Placements Team advising of outcome
Sourcing a placement host
Some ideas that may assist in sourcing a placement host:
- Use existing contacts or make new contacts through student associations, professional networks, JCU career events or your subject lecturer
- Research businesses or firms which fit your area of interest and expertise
- Consider what qualifications, skills and expertise you could offer the business/firm
- Be professional and confident
Approach your preferred host. It is recommended you provide a Resume and Cover Letter highlighting your strengths and areas of interest. The Careers and Employability team have provided some valuable resources to assist with this.
Provide the host with the guide containing sample internship roles. This will assist them in creating a suitable internship/project.
Once the host has confirmed they are willing to take you on, transpose required information into the Self-sourced application form

General Information
- Students in casual or part-time employment can consider applying for an internship within their existing workplace however, must be given a new role and possibly moved to another division within the workplace for the duration of the internship. Casual or part-time students may, and are also encouraged, to apply to organisations other than their existing workplace
- As WIL is a core requirement of the MBA, RPL/exemption/advanced standing is not given
Student Obligations
As a JCU student, your responsibilities when engaging with workplace activities associated with your placement include:
- ensuring that you meet all pre-conditions for the placement, such as enrolment into LB5520, completion of mandatory documentation, attending induction and reading all materials provided;
- complying with your responsibilities as outlined in the JCU Student Conduct Policy;
- acting according to JCU's ethical guidelines, respecting confidentiality and intellectual property issues in the workplace, and complying with any other relevant workplace or professional guidelines, policies, procedures and rules;
- attending the workplace as per the agreed times, ensuring you notify supervisors of inability to attend on designated days. Attendance requirements may vary and in some cases may be negotiated with the workplace supervisor;
- taking responsibility for your learning by participating fully in the learning process and undertaking all learning opportunities provided;
- completing workplace activities in a professional manner within the agreed timeframe, and ensuring that you work systematically towards all assessment requirements for the subject;
- communicating with your workplace supervisor/s and relevant university staff member/s (as appropriate) during the placement, and notifying your University supervisor immediately of any problems that arise.
You are encouraged to disclose to the Subject Lecturer any pre-existing health conditions which may adversely impact on your ability to successfully complete the requirements of your placement. Any information disclosed by you will be used to facilitate an initial conversation between you, the Subject Lecturer and AccessAbility Services in order to ascertain whether you will be able to meet the learning objectives for the placement and to determine whether any reasonable adjustments are able to be made to assist you in meeting those learning objectives. Any pre-existing health conditions which are discussed will not be disclosed to the placement organisation without your prior written consent.
Conflict of Interest
Students are expected to recognise and report any potential, actual or perceived conflicts of interest in their application. Failing to report may jeopardise the placement and the student's overall result.
The following are common areas where a conflict of interest may arise or exist:
- nominated placement host is a family business
- nominated supervisor has family/relative or close friendship status
- any obvious political or organisational affiliations
If a conflict arises during the placement, students must notify their Lecturer and the Academic Director directly.
Where a conflict of interest exists which may lead to an unfair advantage or disadvantage, the internship application may not be approved.

Students will be invited to submit an EOI, inclusive of a Resume, cover letter, and a copy of an unofficial academic transcript. The Careers and Employability team have provided some valuable resources to assist with Resume's and cover letters.
Due to university timelines, late submissions will not be accepted.
EXT students may apply for pre-approved provider options that are suitable - depending on your location.
Do not submit an EOI if you will not be available during the 3 weeks after the closing date.

Application Tips
Providing a good cover letter is your chance to stand out, so follow these tips:
- do some research on the organisation offering the internship/project you are applying for
- outline what you are studying now and how it relates to the role on offer - make a link between this and the organisation
- make links between your skills and the skills that the employer is seeking, and provide clear examples of how you attained these skills
- note why the particular role and the organisation is of interest to you
- Visit the Careers and Employability team to assist with the creation of your cover letter/resume
- ​​Internships are offered on a competitive basis
- Applying does not guarantee you will secure a placement ​​
Selection Process
- Upon closing of EOIs, subject lecturer will conduct their selection process and will then forward onto Academic Director for approval
- If you are successfully matched to an internship/project, you will be notified by the Placements Team. Check your jcu email account regularly
- The Placement Team provides student details to the organisation, who will in turn reach out to student to set up a meeting/interview
- If you are invited for an interview, ensure you research the business, are punctual, present yourself in a professional manner and wear appropriate business attire
- The Placements Team ensures successful students are enrolled into LB5520

- External students (located outside Townsville and Cairns): can submit EOI's to pre-approved providers who offer a virtual or work from home arrangement, or must self-source an internship in their location

Project must sit outside your current role in the workplace e.g. transferred to another area of the business for the duration of the project.

- Your intention to apply for TO5520
- Provide up to 3 names of preferred organisation/s where you would like to undertake placement
- The type of placement you would prefer - internship (task based), OR project (milestones and deliverables)
- Provide a generic Cover Letter and Resume highlighting your areas of strengths and interest. The Careers and Employability team have provided some valuable resources to assist with this
Subject Lecturer will reach out to your preferred organisation/s to deem capacity for them to host a JCU student. If host has capacity, a 3-way meeting (to include host, subject lecturer, and student) will be set up in the workplace to discuss a suitable internship/role for student to undertake, and to deem student is a good fit for their organisation.
Once host has confirmed the placement, transpose required information into the Self-sourced application form
