Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites

Completion of an AQF Level 7 bachelor degree in a discipline cognate to the proposed area of research.

Achievement of an overall grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average) across their undergraduate degree and/or a grade point average of 5.0 in the final year of their undergraduate degree, with credits or better in specific discipline areas.

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 2 Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Additional selection requirements Information published by JCU or otherwise made available to students when applying, may specify additional criteria to be considered in ranking applicants in order of merit if the number of applications exceeds a quota or other limit on the places made available for the course.  Information provided by applicants during the application process and any other information obtained by JCU in the application process may be used by JCU to rank applicants in order of merit by reference to those additional criteria.

Special admission requirements

Honours studies shall normally follow on directly from the pass degree and no later than two years following completion of the pass degree.

Depending on the area of research and/or professional experience placement activities, students must comply with the relevant mandatory pre-placement requirements of the University and the Host facility. Students must complete all professional experience placement requirements by the prescribed deadlines and maintain currency of these requirements in order to stay admitted in the course.

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours), graduates will be able to:

  1. Integrate and apply a coherent and advanced body of theoretical and technical knowledge and skills, with depth in the underlying principles and concepts in the disciplines of Biomedicine
  2. Critically review, analyse, synthesise and evaluate evidence and scientific literature to identify and propose solutions to complex problems with intellectual independence
  3. Apply knowledge of research principles to plan and execute a piece of scientific research with some independence
  4. Convey information, arguments and conclusions through advanced English language and numeracy proficiency, verbal presentation skills & computer literacy (including word processing, databases, graphics and statistical packages) to a variety of audiences
  5. Reflect on current skills, knowledge and attitudes, in order to plan and implement ongoing personal and professional development needs and identify opportunities for lifelong learning
