Admission Requirements

Course pre-requisites

Completion of an AQF Level 7 Bachelor Degree in an arts discipline or qualifications recognised by the Division as equivalent with an overall GPA of at least 5.0.

Additional selection requirements

Applicants must satisfy the requirements of the college(s) in which honours are to be undertaken to ensure that the standard of academic achievement necessary to proceed to an honours degree has been attained.

Special admission requirements

Admission to the honours degree shall follow on directly from the pass degree and, normally, no later than five years following completion of the pass degree.

Students for honours who have graduated with a pass degree from another university, or who graduated more than five years ago, may be required to complete such coursework or assessment as the College Dean recommends as a condition of entry to honours.

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 1 Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Arts with Honours, graduates will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate coherent and advanced knowledge of social theory, practice and professional ethics in at least one discipline in the Arts or Journalism or Social Sciences
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of research principles and methods in at least one discipline in the Arts or Journalism or Social Sciences
  3. Analyse critically and evaluate place and role of Australia and Singapore in the Asia-Pacific region and the tropics worldwide
  4. Review, analyse, consolidate and synthesise perspectives, arguments and sources of qualitative and/or quantitative data pertinent to complex social, political, historical, economic, environmental and/or cultural issues, particularly those related to quality of life in the tropics worldwide
  5. Present a clear and coherent exposition of research to a variety of audiences through advanced proficiency in written and spoken English language and, where appropriate, numeracy skills
  6. Design, plan and execute a research project with some independence
  7. Demonstrate advanced understanding of the relationship between theory and practice in some areas in at least one discipline in the Arts or Journalism or Social Sciences
  8. Respectfully and responsibly apply knowledge of diversity and difference among people, especially vulnerable and Indigenous peoples, in research and scholarship
