Course pre-requisites

Completion of an AQF level 7 Bachelor of Degree in a discipline cognate to the proposed area of research within the previous five years; and

Achievement of an overall grade point average of 5.0 (i.e. credit average) across their bachelor degree, with credits or better in discipline-specific areas.

Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of Band 2 Schedule II of the JCU Admissions Policy.

Additional selection requirements

Application for entry to the program is by approval of the College Dean.

Quota restrictions on the number of honours places available may apply from time to time as determined by the College Dean.

Students for honours who have graduated with a pass degree from this or another university or who graduated more than five years ago may be required to complete such coursework or assessment as the College Dean recommends.

Post admission requirements

Depending on the area of research and/or professional experience placement activities, students must comply with the relevant mandatory pre-placement requirements of the University and the Host facility.  Students must complete all professional experience placement requirements by the prescribed deadlines and maintain currency of these requirements in order to stay admitted in the course.

Course learning outcomes

On successful completion, graduates of the course will be able to:

  • Integrate and apply a coherent and advanced body of theoretical and technical knowledge and skills, with depth in the underlying principles and concepts in the discipline of sports and exercise science

  • Critically review, analyse, synthesise and evaluate evidence to identify and provide solutions to complex problems with intellectual independence

  • Communicate clearly and coherently through advanced English language proficiency and, where appropriate, numeracy skills to specialist and non-specialist audiences

  • Apply knowledge of research principles and methods to plan and execute project work and/or a piece of research and scholarship with some independence

  • Demonstrate appropriate professional behaviour, professional reasoning and sound judgement in problem solving and decision making in a research context.
